Letter to Sapphira

Dear Raven,

Yes, I know that this is what some call you. But you are right. We have never met.

Thank you for your indulgence and for writing me such an honest letter in your very own hand. I will endeavour to earn your fond thoughts because that is important to me.

Writing letters by hand is an old skill, one that keeps us in touch with history. You hit upon many of the reasons why it is my preferred means of communication. I shall admit, with reluctance but good humour, that your Giulia was probably not off the mark either.

After so many years it seems the introduction of these new technologies has meant that I have to step up or flounder under the weight of progress. I can do ‘modern’ when I have to but I do find it all a tedious effort. So I will never give up on a pen and ink. From our souls to our hand to the page. That is as it always shall be.

Your pen was an excellent choice (was it the one given to the Count of Mansfeld by the president of the Parker Pen company by any chance?) and shows off your calligraphy to its very best. I admit that I still prefer to hand make my own quills. The inks I use are made from an old recipe I adapted that dates back a long, long time. It has within it residues of iron, nuts and wine and the process is complicated. It takes me years to produce each batch. I stopped adding blood quite some time ago which improved both the tone and the consistency somewhat but sometimes I feel it has lost a touch of gravitas.

Matthew, my assistant annoys me when he uses a ball point. Then again, that is probably why he does it. That and to remind me of what century we now live in.

Who is Paul Santos? Today the world knows me as an industrialist and entrepreneur but I have had so many names before this one. When I walked amongst the first men I understood not the value of what Mother had created. I feasted on the souls of this beautiful world. I regret that now. As for what I am: on this whole planet there are only a handful of immortals and I am one of them. Quaordan and Old Papa are two of the others. We are all so very, very dangerous in our different ways and you cannot match either of them for tricks or for power. All you have to stand against them is your heart and soul. They say that courage can be your shield, purpose your sword. If that be so then all I can add is that you would need to be mightily brave and committed. Against those two? Absolutely mightily.

You need to know that they and others will be drawn to you. The weak and the strong. Either hide away or learn to deal.
